Investing is a term typically used pertaining to money as in this definition from the Yahoo dictionary, To commit money or capital in order to gain a financial return. We know whatever, and wherever, we put our focus grows. Our focus in essence is our commitment. Are you conscious of where you put your attention or are you unaware when you automatically engage? Whether aware or automatic do you dismiss the pattern as ordinary?
At the start of my workshops I typically ask three questions:
1. How many of you say yes when you need to say no?
2. How many of you experience self-doubt?
3. How many of you put off doing things you know you need to do?
Invariable everyone relates. Though relatable, the key to producing new results is the realization or the ‘aha’ factor of what is truly at the root of the results we dislike and then a commitment to make the necessary adjustments. Working with people in both the coaching and workshop formats has blessed me with witnessing such experiences from people just like you. Though their names have been changed to respect confidentiality, which scenario reminds you of you?
Jane, an independent contractor got caught up in family dynamics during a recent visit. She became quite irritated with how two other people conducted their relationship. She then found herself emotionally impacted to the point that she had felt down, was less effective professionally and brought harsh behavior into her own household. When she gained insight that on some level she interpreted their interaction as protocol for herself, she was able to let go and move forward with a corrective course of action.
Sabrina, a working professional at an organization, became aware of the excuses she was making for her own behavior. She had allowed herself to become overly annoyed with non-participation of co-workers that she justified her aggressiveness to prove herself right. Admitting and owning her contribution led her to move in the direction to develop her skills of patience and communication to decrease her stress and be a more collaborative team player.
Miguel, part of the executive team, realized he hadn’t been fully participating personally and professionally. At work he was merely a team member and needed to be a team player. In his home life his energy had shifted negatively where he desired to share more love and support.
Whether you’re an entrepreneur or a working professional, as human beings we can get distracted into investing in negativity, focusing on other people, being right, taking things personally, complaining and a slew of other excuses that elevate stress as well as decrease productivity and morale. To overcome excuses and decrease stress we must empower ourselves and develop our skills.
