  •  Change is Constant

During my recent visit to Rhode Island and Connecticut for a series of workshops I presented I had the joy of witnessing picturesque fall foliage. Fall to me is symbolic of the beauty and necessity of change.

The irony regarding change is people want different results without making adjustments in their lives. Not possible! I've heard it said that doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.

As I admired the colorful views it occurred to me if we would respond to change as leaves we might enjoy life more and paint breathtaking creations. For example, I've never heard a leaf proclaim I'll change only if the other leaves change. Leaves don't seem to debate about changing. Change is a natural process - and look at the beautiful variations displayed!

Yet many people resist change. Have you ever heard yourself say, "I'll change when he/she changes."? Or worse yet, "Why should I change, no one else is?" When we respond in this manner we put our lives in other people's control and then wonder why we are unhappy.

If we want changes in our lives we must be willing to think thoughts we've never thought before and take actions we've never taken before. How do we do that? By continually adding tools to our toolbox to improve the quality of our lives. How often do you expose yourself to material that adds value to your life? Or do you immerse yourself in mindless TV or magazines about celebrities and then claim to not have enough time or money for things you desire?

Whether I'm conducting a workshop or attending as a participant, I'm amazed at the people who refuse to add valuable tools to their toolbox. Yet these same people have conversations about going shopping after the workshop, or raid the vending machines multiple times throughout the day, or share about going to a movie multiple times.

Where are your priorities? Are they in alignment with your desires? If not, you either have to change your desires or change your priorities. Either way a change is involved. Which do you prefer?

  • Inspiring Quotes

To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.

Henri Bergson

Blessed is the man who has discovered that there is nothing permanent in life but change.

A.P. Gouthey

Welcome change as a friend; try to visualize new possibilities and the blessings it is bound to bring you . . . . Never stop learning and never stop growing; that is the key to a rich and fascinating life.
