Do you identify your job, a person, or maybe . . . the economy as the
cause of your stress? Are you implementing effective practices
consistently? Such habits are extremely beneficial during life challenges
– whether individually or on a larger scale.
Though stress is a very individual response we know it isn’t caused by
external events. Rather the internal interactions (thoughts, inner
dialogue, and emotions) always produce the evidence seen outwardly. Most
people point at circumstances as proof of what they’re now experiencing
internally. Actually, what is happening inside is generating the results
we are surrounded by and see on the outside. Remember our level of
consciousness regarding such processes is not the determining factor if we
experience the outcomes or not.
So what can we do to
Shatter Stress and effectively deal with
life’s challenges?
Begin by recognizing that your job, a person, or the economy is a stressor
NOT stress. Stress is caused by your response to the stressors in your
life. And yes, some stressors may be more demanding than others however
that doesn’t necessarily convert them to stress.
Stress can be shattered with the consistent application of 5 Stress
Transformers:
1 – Action
2 – Value Self
3 – Lifelong Learning
4 – Lose Excuses
5 – Laughter
Action is not the same as activity. Activity is busyness; action on the
other hand is a productive step toward a desired result. No one can take
action for you and have you get the benefit. When appropriate action is
taken fear and worry are eliminated. Reflect on your life, do you have a
lot of activity, or are you taking beneficial actions?
People claim to value themselves but then take actions that demonstrate
otherwise. Look honestly at your actions. What do they convey? Do your
actions suggest a person who values oneself? Or do your actions show a
person who finds value within only after being treated valuable?
In regards to lifelong learning, I’ve heard it said the average American
has not invested in one non-fiction tool on their own in a year.
Congratulations if you have! Of course it isn’t enough to invest in
something if you’re not taking action to implement the concepts. Are you
reading or listening to material with any consistency? Daily is
recommended but at the minimum weekly.
The discussion of excuses arises in almost every presentation I conduct.
People of course can recognize the excuses of others. Most even freely
admit they generate excuses – and additionally identify that area of their
life is not as they’d like. The irony is the number of people who are
content with their excuses and the associated impact instead of
losing their excuses
for their claimed desires. Are you content or committed to overcoming your
excuses?
Laughter is very therapeutic. We know laughing releases natural stress
reducers known as endorphins. How often do you laugh? Even smiling is
beneficial. Granted this can be difficult amidst some of life’s
challenges. Know that we all experience those times and that’s when we
most need to coerce ourselves to act contrary to how we may feel. Willing
to experiment? Smile right now, a great big smile for one minute and
notice the difference!
Learn to dissolve the potential pressures of stressors before the signs of
stress take hold of you. Our bodies eventually tell us, however often
people don’t listen until they’re experiencing serious side affects.
How many of the stress transformers are you applying to your life? How
often and with what consistency? Remember stress is your response to
stressors. Transform your stress by taking action, valuing yourself,
committing to lifelong learning, losing your excuses, and remembering to
laugh!

Why wait? Life is not a dress rehearsal. Quit practicing what you are
going to do, and just do it.
- Marilyn Grey
Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.
- Victor Hugo
Essentially, learning means a change in your thinking, a change in
your feeling, a change in your behavior. Learning means that change takes
place in the mind, in the emotions, and in the will.
