Did you know the typical human
being thinks over 60,000 thoughts a day? I know I’m
not conscious of my 60,000 thoughts, are you? Yet these thoughts create
our feelings and our outcomes.
Often people think outside circumstances cause our inner responses.
Science and spirituality have shown otherwise. What we experience
externally is the evidence of the interactions of the internal, not the
proof for why the internal exists – even if we aren’t aware what is
transpiring! (You may want to reread that last sentence slowly.) You can
easily conduct your own experiment. Maybe you already have but weren’t
attentive of the correlations.
Let’s consider a common experience – driving (even if you don’t drive but
have ever been a passenger you can relate to this). Have you ever been in
a car and have someone cut in front of you? Silly question I know, stay
with me here. When that happened did you find yourself getting irritated
(or whatever feeling arose for you)? But, have you also had someone cut in
front of you and you weren’t phased? Maybe you nonchalantly responded, “I
guess they’re in a hurry”?
What was different in the two scenarios? YOUR thought! Your
thought about someone cutting in front of you determined your response.
Therefore, a key to knowing if you’re thinking beneficial thoughts is to
tune into your body. If you’re at ease and feel calm, loving, and easy
going, your thoughts are in alignment with energy that is beneficial to
you. If on the other hand, you are at dis-ease and feel anxious, fearful,
and annoyed (agitated, angry etc), your thoughts are misaligned and create
energy that is harmful to you.
Be careful here – the event or action of another person has NOT caused the
destructive energy you experience. YOUR thoughts regarding
the situation or person have caused your dis-ease. If you’re thinking some
situations and/or people are more challenging to apply this concept I
totally agree. However, that does not change the responsibility we have to
ourselves regarding our own thoughts. After all, we will create the
experience whether we choose to be responsible or not!
In fact, when we think thoughts that cause dis-ease over and over we
create disease in our bodies. Also, alcohol and other substances can
modify our thought patterns. Many people have experienced the brief,
temporary change after one or a few drinks. However, prolonged regular use
can create a more permanent alteration in the way we think. Though there
are many contributing factors the bottom line is repetitive thought,
whether on our own or substance induced, contributes to our
overall health.
There are two common rebuttals for taking responsibility for our thoughts,
feelings, and outcomes.
1 – If I think different thoughts, I’m letting “them” off the hook
2 – I’m entitled to my feelings and besides anyone would feel this way in
this situation.
Let’s examine the first myth. When you keep thinking dis-ease thoughts
does the other person appear phased? Does thinking dis-ease thoughts
resolve or improve the situation in any way? So if you think different
thoughts, thoughts that put you at ease, who are you really letting off
the hook? It’s a paradigm shift that must occur and
where's your focus?
Regarding the second myth – each of us is certainly entitled to our
feelings – more than most of us realize. Whenever we think a thought, we
in fact are the only person who will experience that associated feeling.
The second half of this myth serves as a justification which prohibits
taking responsibility. And, when said in the above manner, infers everyone
would feel the same.
Have you ever witnessed a situation where one person was annoyed by
another person’s behavior and yet a third party had no reaction? Or, ever
have someone come to you complaining about what another person said (or
did) and you don’t understand their irritation because you think it’s no
big deal?
Point is, not everyone feels the same in all situations. Even if most
would agree, does that consensus serve you or anyone in a beneficial
manner? In other words, consider the majority is not always right. That’s
exactly why a small percentage of people are actually living their
desired
life because they have habits contrary to the majority!
Also, have you ever heard (or maybe said yourself), “If everyone else is
doing it (whatever it is) does that mean you have to too?” My parents
would often say, “If everyone is jumping off a bridge would you?” You may
have even used this phrase as ammunition against others. However, then
have you utilized that same phrase when it’s convenient for you – in other
words,
as an excuse? And finally, refer back to
the examination of myth number one
Remember our thoughts are energy. Our level of awareness does not change
the correlation but when you strive to increase your awareness it can
alter the thoughts you think and then change the choices you make. Use the
following questions as a guide to create your desired outcomes. What/How
am I feeling now? Is this what I desire to experience? If not, what do I
desire to experience? What thought is going to attract energy that is
beneficial and in alignment with that desire? Am I willing to act in
accordance?
